A design collaboration between award-winning architecture and interior design studios in Kuala Lumpur and Sydney, the Pavilion Suites embodies urban refinement. For this project, we needed to creatively match a sample from designer Paul Greenwood of Studio Aria.

We took the time to grasp what Paul had in mind and proposed a wood profile that would add depth and sophistication without appearing dull. We also considered the project scale and other onsite challenges.

Our choice was European Black Ash. In addition to a naturally pronounced grain and uniform colour, it is incredibly stable. All our Black Ash wood planks and strips undergo a heat and steam treatment process, which makes them less prone to warping and cupping.

But what made our material stand out from the rest was achieving the custom black Paul wanted. The same heat treatment process allows the wood to take on stains very well. Instead of an opaque stain, we played with sheer wood stains to deepen the tone without hiding the grain. The result was a design solution which delivered on form as well as function.
